Hudson O’Neal Collects Castrol Series Victory at Tri-County
Set for Eldora’s LOLMDS Dirt Track World Championship

SHINNSTON, W.Va. (10/16/23) – Hudson O’Neal entered a single event last week and made the most of the opportunity with a $23,023 victory aboard his No. 1 Ace Metal Works / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.

O’Neal’s 15th triumph of the season came in Castrol FloRacing Night in America action on Thursday evening at North Carolina’s Tri-County Racetrack during the 18th annual FK Rod Ends Tar Heel 53. He had to overcame mechanical issues to snare the victory.

“We had a terrible miss (in the engine),” O’Neal said. “It started about halfway. I don’t know that it really hurt me, but it was making me nervous. I thought that eventually it was just gonna get worse and worse and worse and we were gonna be out of it. The longer the race went and the slicker (the surface) got up there (near the outside wall), I just kept hanging and hanging and hanging. Then I just started diamonding (the first and second corners). I started doing it a little bit down in (turn) four too and it really helped my exit and got me a lot more speed down the straightaway.

“When something like that happens your heart just sinks, because I’m leading this race and I feel like I’ve got a car good enough to win and then something like that happens. I’m like, ‘No, man, not right now.’ It can’t happen whenever you’re running 10th. Thankfully it held up. Now we are excited to head to Eldora (Speedway) this week and go after both a Lucas Oil (Late Model Dirt Series) and Dirt Track World Championship title.”

Rocket1 Racing and Hudson O’Neal returned to the road with the Castrol FloRacing Night in America miniseries on Thursday as the FK Rod Ends Tar Heel 53 drew 34 competitors to Tri-County Racetrack (Brasstown, N.C.).

O’Neal backed up the fastest lap in time trials with a win in his heat race and a flag-to-flag victory in the 53-lap feature. Despite an early mechanical scare that faded as the race went on, Hudson led wire-to-wire to secure his 15th win of the season and the $23,023 top prize. He finished 1.273 seconds ahead of pole-starting Bobby Pierce with Ricky Thornton Jr., Jonathan Davenport, and Dennis Erb Jr. rounding out the Top-5.

With the victory, O'Neal has closed within nine points of Castrol Flo Racing Night in America point leader Bobby Pierce.

Hudson and Rocket1 Racing now are focused on a huge weekend, which will see them competing for their first-ever Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series title at Eldora Speedway (Rossburg, Ohio) during this weekend’s 43rd annual Dirt Track World Championship.

As one of the four Big River Steel Chase for the Championship presented by ARP finalists, O’Neal can claim the record-setting $200,000 title by being the highest finisher of the eligible quartet of drivers in Saturday’s 100-lap finale.

Ashton Winger Stays Red Hot with $15,000 Fall Classic Victory

HAMPTON, Ga. (10/16/23) – For the fifth-straight race weekend Ashton Winger parked his No. 12 entry in Victory Lane.

His latest trip to the Winner’s Circle came on Saturday night with a $15,000 triumph in the finale of the 29th annual Coors Light Fall Classic at Whynot Motorsports Park with his Jeff Mathews Motorsports No. 12 Johnny Doan Plumbing / Recreational Vehicle Select / XR1 Rocket Chassis / Durham Racing Engine Super Late Model.

His 16th win of the season didn’t come easy though as the Georgia traveler had to search to find the preferred line around the tricky Mississippi oval.

“I kind of rode there for the first 20 laps or so, and then I think I got so conservative that I actually made myself tight through the center of the corner down here,” Winger said in Victory Lane. “It was really thin before they moved the (uke) tires down and Dennis got by me. I went pretty hard for a few laps and I figured I could stay with him, and then when I realized I could stay with him I just needed to wait till it got dirty out there (to make a winning pass).

“I always love coming to Whynot (Motorsports Park), and it’s cool to now be a two-time champion of this event.”

With the scheduled World of Outlaws (WoO) Case Late Model Series events in Georgia washed out, Ashton Winger trekked to Whynot (Miss.) Motorsports Park on Friday afternoon with his Mathews Motorsports crew for the 29th annual Coors Light Fall Classic.

With a pair of $3,000-to-win preliminary features slated for Friday evening, Winger was leading his feature when contact from another competitor cut his tire down and sent him spinning. After pitting for fresh rubber, Ashton charged from deep in the field to finish sixth in the 30-lap main event.

On Saturday, Ashton topped his time trial group before streaking to a heat race victory. Rolling off from the front row in the $15,000-to-win finale, Winger led a handful of laps before slipping to third for much of the 60-lap feature.

With 15 laps remaining, Ashton moved to the middle groove and blew by race-long leader Dennis Erb Jr. on lap 50. Winger led the final 10 laps to secure his second-career Fall Classic triumph and the $15,000 payday. Winger also won the event back in 2019.

Rodney Sanders Wins at Arrowhead Speedway
Mathematically Clinches 2023 USMTS Title

HAPPY, Tex. (10/16/23) – Rodney Sanders not only scored his 16th win of the season on Friday night, but with the triumph at Oklahoma’s Arrowhead Speedway, he also officially clinched the 2023 United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) title with his Wichita Tank Racing / Paulson Rock Products / Stussy Construction No. 20 Texas Locomotive Solutions / Kenny’s Tile / ARMI Contractors / MB Customs Race Car / Hatfield Racing Engine Modified.

Sanders’ unprecedented fifth-series title is worth $100,000. To get the feature win he had to keep Minnesota hard charger, Jake Timm at bay late in the race.

“I know Jake’s been really good lately and I felt like I was pretty good around the top once we got rolling but there’s a lot of grip down there,” Sanders said. “I saw his nose down there and I felt like to win the race I had to at least go block a lap or two. I just didn’t want to overshoot it. It’s kind of hard running the top and then slow down on the bottom.

“I felt like I had a really good car early, but I didn’t know about the lapped cars. I didn't know where I needed to be. I moved around early and I felt pretty good on the bottom too, and we got the win. It’s a pretty amazing feeling to have the USMTS title locked up with a few race nights still to go. A big thank you to everyone who helped us reach our goals this season.”

Rodney Sanders just needed to be conservative over the last few events of the Summit United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) season to score his fifth series title. However, during the inaugural ARMI Contractors All-American at Colcord, Oklahoma’s Arrowhead Speedway, Sanders put the championship out of reach for his competitors by winning on the second night of the three-day program.

The racing action at the state-of-the-art 1/3-mile clay oval kicked off on Thursday when Sanders was one of 55 USMTS competitors on the property. He drove his No. 20 Modified to a runner-up finish in his heat race and transferred to the 35-lap, $3,000-to-win feature event via a win in his B-Main. Sanders picked up an impressive nine positions in the 35-lapper to record a sixth-place result.

The following evening, Sanders was simply dominant. He set the overall quick time in qualifying among 58 USMTS Modifieds with a 14.509-second lap. He then finished third in his heat and rolled off third in the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win A-Main. He took the lead on the first circuit and led every lap, surviving multiple restarts to score his fifth USMTS win of the season by 0.464 seconds over Jake Timm. Jeremy Nelson rounded out the podium, while Tanner Mullens finished fourth and Dereck Ramirez came home fifth.

The win was Sanders’ 16th feature win overall in 2023. With the victory, the 34-year-old driver from Happy, Texas, who now calls Minnesota home, only needs to sign in during the season's final weekend to officially claim the USMTS championship and a $100,000 payday.

Sanders was also strong in Saturday’s $20,023-to-win finale at Arrowhead, an event that brought 55 USMTS Modified drivers to the track. Sanders finished second in his heat race and began the 50-lap feature from the 10th spot. He advanced four positions during the race to register his second sixth-place finish of the weekend and score a top-10 result across all three days of competition.

Drake Troutman Tops Lernerville’s Steel City Stampede
Claims $4,000 for First-Career Jay’s Automotive United Model Series Win

HYNDMAN, Pa. (10/16/23) – Drake Troutman stormed to the $4,000 victory in the 2023 edition of the Steel City Stampede on Friday evening at Lernerville Speedway with his Wheeler Fleet Solutions No. 7 RFI Resources / Longhorn Race Car / Jay Dickens Racing Engine Super Late Model.

Troutman’s 20th overall win of the season marked his first-ever with the Jay’s Automotive United Late Model Series

“We started sixth and were able to get the win against some really good drivers. Hats off to the Lernerville (Speedway) and ULMS staff for shifting things around to make sure we beat Mother Nature and got the Super Late Model show completed,” Troutman said. “We’re scratching a lot of firsts off the list with the Super Late Model, and we couldn’t be more excited for the future.”

Drake Troutman invaded Lernerville Speedway (Sarver, Pa.) on Friday afternoon to compete in the Super Late Model and Modified ranks for the rain-shortened Steel City Stampede.

With the Jay’s Automotive United Late Model Series (ULMS) electing to cancel Saturday’s program and shift the full show to Friday, Troutman followed up the seventh-fastest qualifying effort with a runner-up showing in his heat race.

Taking the feature’s green flag from the sixth-starting spot, Drake soared ahead of early pacesetter Michael Norris on lap 16 and then led the remainder of the 30-lapper to secure 20th win of the season and first career with the ULMS.

He earned a $4,000 payday ahead of Tyler Emory, Alex Ferree, Levi Yetter, and Michael Lake.
In the UEMS Modified division, Drake raced into Saturday’s main event with a fifth-to-third run in his heat race before the finale eventually fell to inclement Mother Nature.
